Prepping for Summer of 2012

Summer is rapidly approaching! And it comes year after year, so why do I always feel like summer catches me with my pants down? This year I refuse to be caught without plans. Of course I’ll be face painting, and I’ve decided to organize the summer by weekly science topics, starting with etymology. I didn’t choose our first topic randomly, it just happens we have a pretty cool bug collection we’ve put together over the years, and its nice to start with something that’s already somewhat prepared for!

My daughter will be entering second grade in the fall, and my middle child kindergarten. I ought to be able to provide science based material for each topic that they can each benefit from, like bug themed coloring pages and mazes they will both enjoy. We will make a paper mache exoskeleton and make small mosaics with bits of broken mirror to represent bug eyes and how they see. My daughter can work on spelling the more advanced words while my son learns to write his name on his coloring pages and worksheets. We’ll buy some big nets and hunt bugs and observe their details from how they move to what color they are to where we found them. They can each keep a journal and draw pictures of the bugs we see and my daughter can write her observations next to the pictures!

So we start with etymology. Then we’ll follow with botany, I think. Botany is a good one for kids, especially in Austin. Austin’s Botanical Gardens are amazing! Austin is also home to some amazing nurseries. Its About Thyme, The Great Outdoors, and The Natural Gardner are awesome places to visit.

Cells are pretty cool, the study of cells is called cytology, and I found a neat microscope at a garage sale with a 5″x5″ screen that shows the organism in a nice big picture vs. having to squint intoΒ  little microscope eye pieces.

Then there’s always the animal kingdoms! I’m working with local traveling petting zoo Tiny Tails To You and we’re welcome to visit the animals any time! There are tortoises and turtles, bearded dragons and gecko’s. Chicks, ducklings, rabbits big and small, hedgehogs and guinea pigs… I feel like I’m forgetting something. Well anyway, Tiny Tails does a free monthly petting zoo during story time at Book People each month, and would be an option for other parents wanting to give their kids a chance to see the different animals!

Aside from science themes we’ll of course have swimming lessons, lazy afternoons in the backyard, ice cream making, and decorating the kids’ room! Summer of 2012, I am ready for you!

The Elf and the Crown Maker

Where is my little elf when I need him??? My sewing machine is smokin’ from all the work going on! Check out some of the cool custom orders recently received:

The green dragon is definitely my favorite. The wings are three dimensional, popping off the edge of the crown and up into the air! The fire is also a three dimensional feature, and the dragon is trying to light the candle on a cupcake. This crown can be customized. Replace the cupcake with a castle, a damsel in distress, a mauled animal, I don’t know! Contact me to discuss the possibilities!

Tiny Tails To You Petting Zoo, Woo WHo!

A month or so ago I posted about the wonderful petting zoo story time we went to at Book People! Well that was a fortuitous day! I talked with the owner of the petting zoo, Tiny Tails to You, about my Etsy shop and the birthday crowns and other items I make. We decided I would make themed birthday crowns to go with her petting zoo! Enter the hedgehog crown:

Seeing Red!

Recently I was contacted through my Etsy shop by a woman wanting a custom designed birthday party package. I make all sorts of party crowns, coordinating guest crowns and hats, birthday banners, and other party items. She was inspired by the red, personalized birthday crown for her daughter:

Red Felt Birthday Crown Personalized with Initial or Number

From this crown she told me she liked red and orange together, and asked if I could make ribbon tie party crowns for the guests with that color scheme? The twist being she was looking for crowns to coordinate with her daughter’s party, but also to be special occasion crowns for her family to wear during holidays and birthdays. She asked that I make them a suitable size for adults, and gussy up the ribbon tie crowns with appliques. I knew she was wanting something for long term use, something that will be pictured for years and will need to be sturdy and beautiful. NO PRESSURE, right?!?! *wipe the sweat from my brow* I took her request of appliques a step further, creating colorful three dimensional pieces adding class and pop that will wow her family and guests for years.

These are just a sampling, she ordered eight. Just think how gorgeous her party is going to be! But wait, there’s a banner.

Felt Happy Birthday Banner available at Woo Who on Etsy

My camera batteries absolutely refused to squeeze out another photo, so the “birthday” ofΒ  “happy birthday” didn’t get taken, lol.

This type of crown and banner would work well with any type of party – baby shower, weddings, birthdays, heck even just for happy hour! Convo me to discuss your needs! Please be aware, custom orders require time, so please order well in advance of your event! Custom design or rush order charges may apply.

Butterflies and Rainbows!

I sat down and cut out about a million butterflies one day not long ago, in lots of colors, and as I sat there admiring the beautiful pile of delicate wings and bodies I wondered, “what am I going to do with these?” Cause I have this problem of getting ahead of myself when I’m working. I throw myself into a project and start brainstorming, then my imagination gets cranked up, after a while the creativity high crashes and there I sit in a pile of materials ready to do…. Hmmm. Since I’m on a crown kick of course I leaned towards a party theme.

Rainbow Butterfly Princess Birthday Crown available at Woo Who on Etsy

Using a tiny cross-stitch in the center of each butterfly I stitched them onto a blank crown piece I had lying about from some earlier burst of production madness, and I must say the resulting butterfly crown is LOVELY. It has been very popular on Etsy,Β  featured in many treasuries, “favorited” a hundred times, and sales have been good too! πŸ™‚ But did I stop there? NO. I had too many butterflies!

Next up, matching butterfly party hats!

Butterfly Party Hats available at Woo Who on Etsy

I stiffen my felt party hats so they retain their shape, then I stitch a thin, soft elastic strap to the base. These hats would look gorgeous adorning the birthday feast table awaiting guests!

What’s a birthday party without a banner?

Birthday Party Banner available at Woo Who on Etsy

All of my birthday crowns can be customized. Just because a banner, wand, or coordinated party hat isn’t in my shop doesn’t mean you can’t have it! I love custom orders. Being a mother of three, add to that a mother of a special needs child, sewing time can be difficult to work into my schedule! So while I make what I can my mind is overstocked with ideas and your custom orders give me an opportunity to make some of those ideas come to life!

Custom Birthday Party Sets

Austin is LOVELY in the spring! A wonderful time and place to open the doors and windows blending the hum of the sewing machine with the chirps and whirs and whooshes of nature. Etsy has been keeping me pleasantly busy, and I’ve had some awesome birthday orders!

First up, the birthday bunny set!

Also available in pink!

To accompany the lovely bunny crowns I have made bunny tail birthday hats. Taking some pointers from milliners I stiffened the felt slightly so the hats hold their shape, I’ve topped each birthday hats with a colorful cotton tail!

Cotton Tail Bunny Birthday Party Hats available at Woo Who on Etsy

This set has been a hot seller, shipping all the way to Sunset Blvd! So fancy! πŸ™‚ It can take quite a bit of time to produce, as I stiffen the felt of the party hats they have to set, so I need at least two week advance orders. I use completely non-toxic kid friendly methods of stiffening, btw! No mad hatters here!

Revisiting Old Ideas

A while back I badly wanted to make felt butterfly wings WITHOUT wire and failed miserably. You may recall reading about my attempt. I used felt for the front and back of the wings, with felt inlays and sandwiched between the front and back I used a fusible fleece. All of these materials hold their shape very well, even in single layers. But the wings I developed were huge. The wings were beautiful and I was so excited – then the whole thing flopped when I tried it on my son. He was so disappointed – as was I! Fusible fleece ain’t cheap, and it had taken a considerable amount to try with the wings. I get mopey when things don’t work out. I sulked for a few months and worked on different projects for a while, then I returned to wings but on a smaller scale. I wanted to do dragon wings. And I wanted to make them without wire. I tried a number of different fusible options and finally success was mine! They were light. They were shapely yet flexible. They did not flop! Very strong and durable, they’ve passed adventure after adventure with flying colors! (pun intended!) So I’m going to return to making butterfly wings. But I want to know, do you like the idea of individual wings – one on each arm? I like the individual wings because the kids can actually flap their wings. Or do you prefer a solid wing with elastic shoulder straps, like traditional fairy wings? Hmmm… Lots to consider. I hope to have a couple of models to write about within the next couple of weeks. Leave me some feedback!!!

You Are My Sunshine

Today was just one of those tricky days. The weather was tricky – cold and yuck. The kids were tricky – crabby for lack of exercise. And I was tricky – grumpy because cold, gray days make me want to hole up behind my sewing machine and stay there watching CSI reruns and stitching. I managed to load us into the car and we hit Central Market for muffins. I told the kids they could get what ever they wanted. Central Market has chocolate everything and I assumed a chocolate something is what the kids would choose – except today was tricky and my assumption was wrong. Hazel went for a glazed cinnamon raisin bun, and Walter came unglued in his excitement at getting a blueberry muffin! Armed with a freshly ground bag of coffee and muffins we returned home to watch Peter Pan and clean the kids’ room. Again my assumption that their room would be a nightmare was proved false. We had so much fun cleaning and organizing!!! Definitely the most surprising highlight of my day. I had accepted that I wasn’t going to get anything new made, when again, life surprised me with a little gift of time and I cranked out what I’m going to call the first of My Sunshine series.

Summer Day Felt Child's Crown

The circle in the center can either feature a large summer flower, or the initial of the light of your life. In my case this crown is going to feature the letter “H” for my darling daughter, and I’ll make her a summer scepter and skirt to match. This crown and scepter will be available in my Etsy shop.

Minding My OWN Business

I have been having so much fun playing with my kids, making candles and working on my daughter’s etsy shop I haven’t been getting much work done with my own business! So today I am going to Mind My OWN Business, and get to work on some super cute felt crowns. Now these haven’t been stitched up yet, but I wanted to give you a sense of my direction.

Pink and Red Hearts Felt Crown Available at Woo Who on Etsy

Of course a lovely Valentine’s themed crown with beautiful red and pink hearts secured with buttons.

Purple Flowers, Yellow Centers, Lime Green Butterfly available at Woo Who on Etsy

A spring time crown with beautiful purple flowers and lime green butterflies.

Red and Gold Hearts and Stars Super Hero Crown available at Woo Who on Etsy

This one celebrates the power of love! Red and gold together on a cream background – striking!

Pink and Red Flowerettes Felt Crown available at Woo Who on Etsy

This crown with the pink and red flowers was intense! I hand tied a faux pearl into the center of each flower. I tied them each individually so in the event one came off they wouldn’t all come off! But this meant hand tying twenty something flowers. Its lovely, truly, but I’m going to have to come up with a more time conserving option for my shop!

Since taking these pictures I’ve managed to sew everything down and stitch the crown itself – each crown has a lovely accent thread around the edge – pink, of course, for the hearts crown, lime green thread for the purple flower spring crown, and gold stitching on the Power of Love crown.

Have any thoughts on my crowns? Think they need a little something? I’d love to hear your opinions!

Soon to follow, coordinating star wands!

Felt Flower and Butterfly Hair Accessories!

I’ve recently entered the felt flower craze! Felt flowers are GORGEOUS if done correctly. So far I am LOVING my daffodils.

And my pansies.

In addition to flowers, I’ve been working on the sweetest, most delicate little butterflies! I use two different colored butterflies one on top of the other. I stitch them together down their center to create their tiny bodies and use a wee spot of glue to secure them onto the bobby pin. When in the hair they appear to have landed there as if by magic. My favorite is an olive and mustard colored butterfly. Although, these red and white Valentine’s butterflies come in a close second!

Guess what?!?! I received a lightbox for Christmas! Hello awesome product photos!!! πŸ˜€

Heart Felt Valentine’s Garland Tutorial and Giveaway

Valentine’s Day is one of my favorite holidays. Yes, candy, flowers, and the idea that love is in the air is nice, but truly I love the color palette of Valentine’s. I love chocolate brown and red, pink, cream, and turquoise color combinations, and for me anything I make for Valentine’s can be used year round.

Recently I started working on a Heart Felt Garland. Unlike the felt circle Christmas tree we made using free hand cut circles, I prefer to use a die to cut out my hearts. The dies make the cutting out go faster, it ensures uniformity in size and shape, and its fun to do with kids. I punched out 100+ hearts with my four year old son. He’s super into mechanical things, and he thought turning the handle of the big shot and plucking the hearts off of the cutting mat was the coolest thing in the world! Whether you are cutting by hand or using a punch, cutting out a hundred hearts is time consuming, but we used it as a way to merge our adult and child worlds and spend time together.

Once I had my pile of hearts, I lined them up in the pattern I wanted to stitch them in. This is far faster than picking through the pile for the right size when its time to stitch on a new heart. (By the way, I’m using premium red felt. Premium felt is thicker than the regular eco felt, and the red is richer and deeper. The thickness of the felt gives the shapes structure. If I was using eco felt for this project I might do two-ply hearts. Doubling up on the hearts would give it depth as well as structure.)

Stitching the garland is easy! Make sure you have a good tail of thread at the beginning, and back stitch on the first heart as you would any sewing project. *Note – don’t leave too much space between the hearts as you sew! Regular sewing machines are not made to create thread chains as sergers are, and leaving too large a space between the hearts can cause your bobbin thread to jump and the machine to bog down. As you can see as my hearts run out the back of the machine, the tip of the first heart fits right into the cleavage of the next heart.

By the time I was through I had a heart felt garland length of 9.25 feet! πŸ™‚ I’m going hang it from hooks around the ceiling of my children’s room. Like I said, I love chocolate brown, turquoise, red and cream. Up next is painting their walls turqoise, the bed chocolate brown, and the windowsills/door frames cream! πŸ™‚

Would you like a heart felt garland? Of course they’re available for purchase in my Etsy shop, however after I finished my lengthy garland, I made a mini garland of large and small hearts measuring approximately 26 inches. It would be perfect to hang in a window or off a doorknob, and I’m giving it away!!! Please visit Woo Who! on Facebook and click our “LIKE” button! Then return to this post and leave a comment telling me you did. If you’ve already been to our FB and joined us, check out my Etsy shop and comment on an item in the shop thatΒ  you like and why! I love feedback. This give away will end on February 14th. πŸ™‚

Dragon Wings

Pink and Purple Dragon Wings

Blue Dragon Wings with Green Topstitching

Ding! Ding! Ding! Come and get it! If your imagination is hungry, come and see what I’m cookin’ up for you! On the table today are dragon wings! Dragons come in all colors, and I have certainly embraced a rainbow with these wings! Bright felt wings have decorative stitching in a bright contrasting color. These wings are individual wings with velcro arm straps. They are a one size fits all imaginations! I use a stiff interfacing in the wings in place of wire, so you never have to worry about the wire ends poking through. This also ensures they will not bend out of shape! If you get a wrinkle in your wing simply iron (use a hot setting AND a pressing cloth! If you place your hot iron directly onto felt it may melt and potentially ruin your iron and your wings!) Wings and flying are great and all, but what are dragons famous for? Oh right, BREATHING FIRE. These fabulous wings come with three FIRE BALLS for your fire breathing pleasure. Made of soft yarn, these puffs are handmade with love and are mostly safe for throwing in the house! Even a yarn ball can knock stuff down, but it won’t put out any eyes or break t.v.’s, lol.

I love opinions! Do you like my design? Would your kids like to wear these? Are you interested in larger size options? I can make them for adults, too! Check out my listings on Etsy!

Felt Circles Christmas Tree

Oh Blogosphere, thank you for the constant influx of inspiration!!! Julia Crossland posted the cutest Christmas tree how-to ever! And as usual I thought to myself, “now why didn’t I think of that???” I have felt in abundance. I have bored kids. I have needles and thread. So we got busy.

My kids don’t have the fortitude to sit and do something beginning to end, especially if it takes longer than two five minutes. This project is easy to break up into sections, and sometimes this makes it even easier to do with multiple kids. For example, my daughter wakes up early while my older son sleeps later. She cut the circles over several days before the sun came up. Once the circles were finished, I cut a length of brownish felt, ran a line of glue down the center and rolled it up. Later on I sat with my four year old son and the circles my daughter had cut and talked about the size of the circles and how to stack them to be tree-like, largest to smallest. I then, when the glue was dry, threaded the trunk onto the embroidery thread and handed the small, pointy needle to my four year old and he started threading the felt circles.

I didn’t do dots or any guiding marks, I just explained we wanted the thread to go through the middle if possible. It pleases me that our tree leans off center in places. My son is a little off center himself. Then I cut a star and stitched the edges – my daughter helped initially but its hard for little hands to stitch something so small. She asked for help and I took it over.

Voila! Our masterpiece is complete and hanging on the mantle next to the stockings. πŸ™‚

Eek! Its a Mouse!

Its the cutest little mouse you’ve ever seen! I’m makin’ mouse clips and my daughter loves them.

They’re adorable in hair with their cute, curly tails popping up! Poised above the ear you have to wonder what sort of mousy secrets they are sharing!

You can see I’ve got a whole line up of mice in different colors in the works! Grays, reds, browns, greens, blues, each cuter than the one before. I’ve got a line of flowers I’ll be starting soon, too! If you’re interested in purchasing, check my shop for these and other fun things!

It Feels Good to be Featured

Towards the end of the summer I was contacted by a Trista Andersen, a blogger, who wanted to review an item from my shop to promote during the “Made With Love” blogging event. “Made With Love” is an event of 100+ bloggers discussing handmade items from around the internet and the same items that will also be part of a give-away package.Β  My sales were beginning to build momentum and I wasn’t sure I was ready to participate, but I sighed that sigh that always happens before I do something I know I haven’t thought through and I shipped her off a hat. A red gnome hat. Why did it make me nervous? I think a part of me was worried she wouldn’t like it. A part of me was worried about the review. A part of me was worried no one would be interested in my hat. Ya’ know, all the usual self doubt stuff that goes through our heads for no reason that has a basis in reality. And then the email came: her son refused to take the hat off! πŸ™‚ Happy day. And recently her review of Woo Who was published. To enter to win a red gnome hat of your own read her post, comment, and sit back and wait to be notified! I have enjoyed reading people’s comments and have experienced an influx of visitors to Woo Who’s Facebook and Etsy shop. Its the social media highway in action! Andersons Angels is a neat blog concept and I hope you will check her out. And in a few days you should check into my Etsy. I’m working on embellishments for the gnome hats that double as hairclips! Mice and flowers and birds and shrooms, its going to be so adorable. Pictures of my progress will be coming soon!

Toodles!

Family Gnome Hats Award Winning Costume!!!

One of my favorite things about Etsy is accepting custom orders. Customers have the most creative ideas. Check out this family:

Mama Gnome contacted me and asked for a family of hats and beards for all the boys. The baby’s hat has a beautiful red ribbon under-chin tie. The hats turned out super cute and they won first place in their costume competition!!! πŸ˜€ I’m so proud to have been a major contributor to their win. Aren’t they adorable?
