Everybody loves to have their faces painted, adults and children alike. But adults can be hesitant to be painted because they know the removal process can be tough! Here are a few tips for removing face paint gently and effectively:
My personal preferred method is to start with a baby wipe. If you start by splashing water on your face you’re going to create an incredible, smeary mess! Using a baby wipe, start from the outer edge of the design and wipe towards the middle of the design, with a lifting motion at the end. Fold your baby wipe and continue to wipe and lift paint off the face until you’ve removed most of the paint. Use more than one wipe if necessary!
Once most of the paint has been removed there are several directions you can go: cold cream, baby soap such as Johnson’s and Johnson’s, or baby oil. You know your skin, and your child’s skin, and what will work best for them. Some people have extremely sensitive skin and need something like Cetaphil – Cetaphil burns the heck out of eyes, tho, so be aware of your products! Choose what is safe for you, but be careful all the same!
Ponds makes an excellent, inexpensive cold cream that can be found in most grocery and drug stores. Once I have lifted off the majority of the paint I cover the area that was painted in cold cream! Doesn’t have to be much, a thin layer will do. Let it sit for 2-5 minutes, and using a soft washcloth or cotton pads, begin wiping and lifting the remaining paint residue off of your face. This is an extremely gentle method for paint removal.
Using a baby soap, simply wet and wash the face as usual, blotting dry with a washcloth and applying moisturizer as needed!
Baby oil is a last resort in my book! Apply as you would the cold cream, a thin layer over the painted area, and let it sit for a minute before using a cotton wipe or washcloth to wipe and lift the remaining paint from the face. However, after you’ve removed the paint you still need to wash your face! Baby oil leaves OIL all over the face! This can be an unpleasant feeling and can clog those sensitive pores.
So now you have no excuses! The next time you see a face paint artist get in line and enjoy yourself!
I spent Saturday afternoon at a beautiful company picnic painting faces with Tiny Tails Petting Zoo at a company party for IGDA!
The rainbow one stroke is a perfect design for squirmy sweeties! Add a cloud of glitter at the end and voila! You’ve got one happy kid!
I love this design. I painted it ages ago and its been in my idea book forever. Still, Saturday was the first time someone requested my rocket and astronaut design! How cool is that?
No day of face painting is complete until the butterfly has been painted! 🙂
July is HOT in Texas! And we had some hot face painting going on! Tropical butterflies, phoenix birds, lightning bolts and dragons among other designs!
Check out my kit, all set up and ready to paint. 🙂

YOU KEEP ALL COSTUMES!
Since school is out for the summer I’ve been incredibly busy, can you imagine why? Yes, three little toots will keep things moving! But I’ve managed to work on, and actually photograph, some painting! I bought some star stencils and tried them out on the blue eye design above, and I really love the affect they have on the eye design!
I’m doing a Fourth of July party on, you guessed it, July 4th, so check out the fireworks! My daughter LOVED the look. So cool.
My son humored me with the kissy fish. He swore it was girly, boys don’t make kissy faces. But it looked great on him regardless!
And the Very Hungry Caterpillar! We went to the book store after painting this and got some fun pictures of Walter in front of the display of Very Hungry Caterpillar books and stuffed caterpillars. 🙂
If you are having a party and need a face painter, shoot me an email! Book in advance, my slots fill up fast! 🙂
Yes, we live in Texas. Yes, its barely mid June. Yes, I am making fleece hats! No, I haven’t gone mad! Tis the season to get a jump on sewing for winter orders!
This hat is so fun! The design can be used to make a variety of things, including a shark hat, a creature from the black lagoon, toothless from how to train your dragon, a unicorn, a dragon or any kind, the possibilities are endless!
This hat is in two parts, the hat itself, and the bottom jaw is actually a cowl, a separate piece from the hat. Many color combinations are available, including pinks and purples! 🙂 Little girls like to be monsters, too!
May has to be one of the most exciting months in the year!!! Everything comes to an END. It is always such a relief to have made it through to another summer. 🙂 One of the things I look forward to most every May is my daughter’s ballet recital. She is second year pre-ballet at Ballet Austin. We’ve worked so hard getting her to class through all her little brother’s illnesses and emergencies – her Grammie even coming in from out of town to make sure she gets to class!!! We are so proud of you Hazel!!!
I just love face painting! 🙂 I especially love little girls who want to be dragons! Lots of great imaginations at this party!
If you are having a themed party I can put together face painting designs to go with your theme, or choose from one of my themed party packages!

Summer is rapidly approaching! And it comes year after year, so why do I always feel like summer catches me with my pants down? This year I refuse to be caught without plans. Of course I’ll be face painting, and I’ve decided to organize the summer by weekly science topics, starting with etymology. I didn’t choose our first topic randomly, it just happens we have a pretty cool bug collection we’ve put together over the years, and its nice to start with something that’s already somewhat prepared for!
My daughter will be entering second grade in the fall, and my middle child kindergarten. I ought to be able to provide science based material for each topic that they can each benefit from, like bug themed coloring pages and mazes they will both enjoy. We will make a paper mache exoskeleton and make small mosaics with bits of broken mirror to represent bug eyes and how they see. My daughter can work on spelling the more advanced words while my son learns to write his name on his coloring pages and worksheets. We’ll buy some big nets and hunt bugs and observe their details from how they move to what color they are to where we found them. They can each keep a journal and draw pictures of the bugs we see and my daughter can write her observations next to the pictures!
So we start with etymology. Then we’ll follow with botany, I think. Botany is a good one for kids, especially in Austin. Austin’s Botanical Gardens are amazing! Austin is also home to some amazing nurseries. Its About Thyme, The Great Outdoors, and The Natural Gardner are awesome places to visit.
Cells are pretty cool, the study of cells is called cytology, and I found a neat microscope at a garage sale with a 5″x5″ screen that shows the organism in a nice big picture vs. having to squint into little microscope eye pieces.
Then there’s always the animal kingdoms! I’m working with local traveling petting zoo Tiny Tails To You and we’re welcome to visit the animals any time! There are tortoises and turtles, bearded dragons and gecko’s. Chicks, ducklings, rabbits big and small, hedgehogs and guinea pigs… I feel like I’m forgetting something. Well anyway, Tiny Tails does a free monthly petting zoo during story time at Book People each month, and would be an option for other parents wanting to give their kids a chance to see the different animals!
Aside from science themes we’ll of course have swimming lessons, lazy afternoons in the backyard, ice cream making, and decorating the kids’ room! Summer of 2012, I am ready for you!
Where is my little elf when I need him??? My sewing machine is smokin’ from all the work going on! Check out some of the cool custom orders recently received:
The green dragon is definitely my favorite. The wings are three dimensional, popping off the edge of the crown and up into the air! The fire is also a three dimensional feature, and the dragon is trying to light the candle on a cupcake. This crown can be customized. Replace the cupcake with a castle, a damsel in distress, a mauled animal, I don’t know! Contact me to discuss the possibilities!
Here are a couple of variations on the butterfly crown.
Bring on the bling! Sparkly sequined centered flowers!
And a dinosaur crown for a lucky first birthday!
That’s not all, but the rest is still under wraps! Check back soon!
I had so much fun with my daughter’s birthday this year!
It had been my intention to make Hazel a butterfly crown like I sell in my Etsy shop, but of course she didn’t want to wear it!
All the little girls got butterfly face paint – aren’t they lovely?
And we had a snake and a kitty, too!
It was a beautiful day at the park. Overcast, cool in the shade, breezy, we couldn’t have asked for a more perfect afternoon!
A month or so ago I posted about the wonderful petting zoo story time we went to at Book People! Well that was a fortuitous day! I talked with the owner of the petting zoo, Tiny Tails to You, about my Etsy shop and the birthday crowns and other items I make. We decided I would make themed birthday crowns to go with her petting zoo! Enter the hedgehog crown:
And of course one for the little ladies:
Can’t live without a pink version:
And finally, bunny tail party hats!
These crowns are so fun! I’ve made several for her already! And through Etsy I have shipped the bunny crowns as far as Canada!
I am so excited to share some of my newly mastered designs!
I sat down and cut out about a million butterflies one day not long ago, in lots of colors, and as I sat there admiring the beautiful pile of delicate wings and bodies I wondered, “what am I going to do with these?” Cause I have this problem of getting ahead of myself when I’m working. I throw myself into a project and start brainstorming, then my imagination gets cranked up, after a while the creativity high crashes and there I sit in a pile of materials ready to do…. Hmmm. Since I’m on a crown kick of course I leaned towards a party theme.
Using a tiny cross-stitch in the center of each butterfly I stitched them onto a blank crown piece I had lying about from some earlier burst of production madness, and I must say the resulting butterfly crown is LOVELY. It has been very popular on Etsy, featured in many treasuries, “favorited” a hundred times, and sales have been good too! 🙂 But did I stop there? NO. I had too many butterflies!
Next up, matching butterfly party hats!
I stiffen my felt party hats so they retain their shape, then I stitch a thin, soft elastic strap to the base. These hats would look gorgeous adorning the birthday feast table awaiting guests!
What’s a birthday party without a banner?
All of my birthday crowns can be customized. Just because a banner, wand, or coordinated party hat isn’t in my shop doesn’t mean you can’t have it! I love custom orders. Being a mother of three, add to that a mother of a special needs child, sewing time can be difficult to work into my schedule! So while I make what I can my mind is overstocked with ideas and your custom orders give me an opportunity to make some of those ideas come to life!

Austin is LOVELY in the spring! A wonderful time and place to open the doors and windows blending the hum of the sewing machine with the chirps and whirs and whooshes of nature. Etsy has been keeping me pleasantly busy, and I’ve had some awesome birthday orders!
First up, the birthday bunny set!
Also available in pink!
To accompany the lovely bunny crowns I have made bunny tail birthday hats. Taking some pointers from milliners I stiffened the felt slightly so the hats hold their shape, I’ve topped each birthday hats with a colorful cotton tail!
This set has been a hot seller, shipping all the way to Sunset Blvd! So fancy! 🙂 It can take quite a bit of time to produce, as I stiffen the felt of the party hats they have to set, so I need at least two week advance orders. I use completely non-toxic kid friendly methods of stiffening, btw! No mad hatters here!

Today was just one of those tricky days. The weather was tricky – cold and yuck. The kids were tricky – crabby for lack of exercise. And I was tricky – grumpy because cold, gray days make me want to hole up behind my sewing machine and stay there watching CSI reruns and stitching. I managed to load us into the car and we hit Central Market for muffins. I told the kids they could get what ever they wanted. Central Market has chocolate everything and I assumed a chocolate something is what the kids would choose – except today was tricky and my assumption was wrong. Hazel went for a glazed cinnamon raisin bun, and Walter came unglued in his excitement at getting a blueberry muffin! Armed with a freshly ground bag of coffee and muffins we returned home to watch Peter Pan and clean the kids’ room. Again my assumption that their room would be a nightmare was proved false. We had so much fun cleaning and organizing!!! Definitely the most surprising highlight of my day. I had accepted that I wasn’t going to get anything new made, when again, life surprised me with a little gift of time and I cranked out what I’m going to call the first of My Sunshine series.
The circle in the center can either feature a large summer flower, or the initial of the light of your life. In my case this crown is going to feature the letter “H” for my darling daughter, and I’ll make her a summer scepter and skirt to match. This crown and scepter will be available in my Etsy shop.
My darling daughter woke up feeling awful! Sweet thing, couldn’t breathe, couldn’t talk, coughing like crazy! It was a unanimous decision to go to the pediatrician instead of school! Fortunately or unfortunately, depending on how you looked at it, my darling wasn’t sick. No strep. No fever. No nuthin’. At least with bacteria there’s ANTIbiotics! Instead she has ALLERGIES. Texas allergies are starting to catch on to my kids, even tho I give them Zyrtec! Anyway, she was so pitiful at the doctor’s office. Until we got home. Its amazing how perky they get when they realize they don’t have to go to school.
We took pictures of her candles and posted them in her Etsy shop:
We worked on making valentines:
And we had a tea party! Central Market is so lovely. They put all the broken or wilted flowers in a bucket with a piggy bank for the kids to “buy.” My daughter picked out a lively bouquet:
Mid afternoon she was really starting to feel better, and I said, “school tomorrow!” Sadly, after bath and intense studying of spelling words she wilted worse than our flowers. Her eyes turned to glass, her throat dried up, she couldn’t pass air in or out her nose. You can’t fake this stuff. *sigh* Sick days with my darling are pretty wunnerful. I think I’ll keep her home one more day. 😀
They look so great! I used a satin casing for the elastic in the back, and wow, it really makes things pop! Check them out!
Here’s another one with the front and side views:
And oh my stars, look at these!
The red one has sequins in the smaller hearts to add a bit of bling, the purple crown’s small stars have french knots in the center.
These were a lot of fun to make and I have ideas for about twenty more! I love custom orders, so if you’re in the market for a crown and see something that is ALMOST perfect, message me and lets chat!
