Face Paint Removal Tips

Everybody loves to have their faces painted, adults and children alike. But adults can be hesitant to be painted because they know the removal process can be tough! Here are a few tips for removing face paint gently and effectively:

My personal preferred method is to start with a baby wipe. If you start by splashing water on your face you’re going to create an incredible, smeary mess! Using a baby wipe, start from the outer edge of the design and wipe towards the middle of the design, with a lifting motion at the end. Fold your baby wipe and continue to wipe and lift paint off the face until you’ve removed most of the paint. Use more than one wipe if necessary!

Once most of the paint has been removed there are several directions you can go: cold cream, baby soap such as Johnson’s and Johnson’s, or baby oil. You know your skin, and your child’s skin, and what will work best for them. Some people have extremely sensitive skin and need something like Cetaphil – Cetaphil burns the heck out of eyes, tho, so be aware of your products! Choose what is safe for you, but be careful all the same!

Ponds makes an excellent, inexpensive cold cream that can be found in most grocery and drug stores. Once I have lifted off the majority of the paint I cover the area that was painted in cold cream! Doesn’t have to be much, a thin layer will do. Let it sit for 2-5 minutes, and using a soft washcloth or cotton pads, begin wiping and lifting the remaining paint residue off of your face. This is an extremely gentle method for paint removal.

Using a baby soap, simply wet and wash the face as usual, blotting dry with a washcloth and applying moisturizer as needed!

Baby oil is a last resort in my book! Apply as you would the cold cream, a thin layer over the painted area, and let it sit for a minute before using a cotton wipe or washcloth to wipe and lift the remaining paint from the face. However, after you’ve removed the paint you still need to wash your face! Baby oil leaves OIL all over the face! This can be an unpleasant feeling and can clog those sensitive pores.

So now you have no excuses! The next time you see a face paint artist get in line and enjoy yourself!

Since school is out for the summer I’ve been incredibly busy, can you imagine why? Yes, three little toots will keep things moving! I bought some star stencils and tried them out on the blue eye design above, and I really love the affect they have on the eye design!

My son humored me with the kissy fish. He swore it was girly, boys don’t make kissy faces. But it looked great on him regardless!

Very Hungry Caterpillar Face Paint

And the Very Hungry Caterpillar! We went to the book store after painting this and got some fun pictures of Walter in front of the display of Very Hungry Caterpillar books and stuffed caterpillars. 🙂

Etsy is such a lovely community, and the community is brought about by our wonderful customers. Recently Woo Who! was contacted and asked to create a felt birthday crown to match invitations purchased from another Etsy retailer, Olive and Star.

Just as Woo Who! has coordinating party items, Olive and Star has RSVP cards and cupcake toppers and other options that really put the icing on the cake!

Hazel’s Ballet Recital

May has to be one of the most exciting months in the year!!! Everything comes to an END. It is always such a relief to have made it through to another summer. 🙂 One of the things I look forward to most every May is my daughter’s ballet recital. She is second year pre-ballet at Ballet Austin. We’ve worked so hard getting her to class through all her little brother’s illnesses and emergencies – her Grammie even coming in from out of town to make sure she gets to class!!! We are so proud of you Hazel!!!

Happy Mother’s Day

We do not participate in traditional celebrations of what I call “Hallmark” holidays around here. We enjoy the holidays, but in our own way. I don’t need over-priced bouquets of flowers or chocolate, or a meal in a restaurant on one of the busiest days of the year. Its nice to have an annual reminder to take the time to appreciate the loved ones in our lives, but everyday can be a Valentine’s or a Mother’s or Father’s day. We try hard to teach our children to show appreciation and be thankful year round and we don’t put a lot of pressure on the holidays.

That said, today is Mother’s Day. I bought us strawberry and goat cheese muffins to have for breakfast, made myself an extra cup of coffee, and pretended Oliver’s sleeping till 8:30am (as opposed to getting me up at 4:30am) was some kind of unconscious gift! And as I held my little Oliver this morning I couldn’t help but think of the fragility of our time together. The ache of the terror and grief I experienced having almost lost my son is as sharp today as it was two and a half years ago, and prodded me to think about what Mother’s Day, the actual day, means to me. My conclusion is that I am so thankful to be a mother. Its easy for us to forget what a privilege it is to be a mom, as it is easy for our kids and spouses to forget how lucky they are to have us.  Mother’s Day is as much about appreciating my family as it is about them appreciating me. So I resolve: Today I will not worry or stress. I will enjoy my domestic activities as my disaster of a house is really evidence of our wonderful life together. I will laugh at my children’s antics instead of worrying about the couch pillows. I will hold, hug, and kiss my kids as they require. I will stop what I’m doing when I’m needed and appreciate the interruptions because my life would be so empty without them. I love you, my little ones, and I love you, my husband. What and where would I be without you? Happy Mother’s Day to me!

Prepping for Summer of 2012

Summer is rapidly approaching! And it comes year after year, so why do I always feel like summer catches me with my pants down? This year I refuse to be caught without plans. Of course I’ll be face painting, and I’ve decided to organize the summer by weekly science topics, starting with etymology. I didn’t choose our first topic randomly, it just happens we have a pretty cool bug collection we’ve put together over the years, and its nice to start with something that’s already somewhat prepared for!

My daughter will be entering second grade in the fall, and my middle child kindergarten. I ought to be able to provide science based material for each topic that they can each benefit from, like bug themed coloring pages and mazes they will both enjoy. We will make a paper mache exoskeleton and make small mosaics with bits of broken mirror to represent bug eyes and how they see. My daughter can work on spelling the more advanced words while my son learns to write his name on his coloring pages and worksheets. We’ll buy some big nets and hunt bugs and observe their details from how they move to what color they are to where we found them. They can each keep a journal and draw pictures of the bugs we see and my daughter can write her observations next to the pictures!

So we start with etymology. Then we’ll follow with botany, I think. Botany is a good one for kids, especially in Austin. Austin’s Botanical Gardens are amazing! Austin is also home to some amazing nurseries. Its About Thyme, The Great Outdoors, and The Natural Gardner are awesome places to visit.

Cells are pretty cool, the study of cells is called cytology, and I found a neat microscope at a garage sale with a 5″x5″ screen that shows the organism in a nice big picture vs. having to squint into  little microscope eye pieces.

Then there’s always the animal kingdoms! I’m working with local traveling petting zoo Tiny Tails To You and we’re welcome to visit the animals any time! There are tortoises and turtles, bearded dragons and gecko’s. Chicks, ducklings, rabbits big and small, hedgehogs and guinea pigs… I feel like I’m forgetting something. Well anyway, Tiny Tails does a free monthly petting zoo during story time at Book People each month, and would be an option for other parents wanting to give their kids a chance to see the different animals!

Aside from science themes we’ll of course have swimming lessons, lazy afternoons in the backyard, ice cream making, and decorating the kids’ room! Summer of 2012, I am ready for you!

The Elf and the Crown Maker

Where is my little elf when I need him??? My sewing machine is smokin’ from all the work going on! Check out some of the cool custom orders recently received:

The green dragon is definitely my favorite. The wings are three dimensional, popping off the edge of the crown and up into the air! The fire is also a three dimensional feature, and the dragon is trying to light the candle on a cupcake. This crown can be customized. Replace the cupcake with a castle, a damsel in distress, a mauled animal, I don’t know! Contact me to discuss the possibilities!

Happy Birthday Hazel

I had so much fun with my daughter’s birthday this year!

For her cake we ordered edible butterflies from Sugar Robot on Etsy:

Happy Birthday Hazel!

Happy Birthday Hazel!

It had been my intention to make Hazel a butterfly crown like I sell in my Etsy shop, but of course she didn’t want to wear it!

All the little girls got butterfly face paint – aren’t they lovely?

And we had a snake and a kitty, too!

It was a beautiful day at the park. Overcast, cool in the shade, breezy, we couldn’t have asked for a more perfect afternoon!

Tiny Tails To You Petting Zoo, Woo WHo!

A month or so ago I posted about the wonderful petting zoo story time we went to at Book People! Well that was a fortuitous day! I talked with the owner of the petting zoo, Tiny Tails to You, about my Etsy shop and the birthday crowns and other items I make. We decided I would make themed birthday crowns to go with her petting zoo! Enter the hedgehog crown:
